The SmartMove app helps you along the way

With the SmartMove app, you have everything you need at your fingertips. Not only can you register for SmartMove, you also get access to many other useful features. Such as a route planner and an overview of all the alternatives for getting to your destination.

Create your profile on the SmartMove app.
Link your number plate to your profile (you can enter several vehicles).
Activate the app before you drive off.
The app reports your departure time and the distance you travel.
You can estimate in advance what your ride will cost. The app also suggests various alternatives.

Today, the major approach roads and tunnels are already equipped with number plate recognition (ANPR cameras). This network is being extended to cover the entire Brussels region.

When you drive past a camera, it recognises your number plate.

The system checks whether you have already registered your trip in SmartMove. If not, you risk a fine.

This is how your contribution is calculated

The basic principle is simple: every car, motorcycle or van that uses the Brussels road network on working days pays a tax. The intelligent kilometre charge consists of a daily starting amount and an amount per kilometre. It is calculated according to three variables:

Time of day - driving during peak hours costs more than during less busy periods. This applies to both the starting amount and the kilometre component.
