The basic principle is simple: every car, motorcycle or van that uses the Brussels road network on working days pays a tax. The intelligent kilometre charge consists of a daily starting amount and an amount per kilometre. It is calculated according to three variables:
Time of day - driving during peak hours costs more than during less busy periods. This applies to both the starting amount and the kilometre component.
Distance - the more kilometres you travel, the more you pay.
Engine size - the more powerful your car, the higher the starting amount.
With these three elements, you can influence how much you pay.
Who will be exempted from the kilometre charge?
Trucks are already subject to Viapass and are therefore not covered by SmartMove.
Currently, these categories of vehicles are exempt from the intelligent kilometre charge:
Transport of persons with disabilities
Coaches and buses
Two-wheeled mopeds not exceeding 45 kph
All other motor vehicles are subject to the ordinary rules.
